Health Tech Review: Using Runkeeper With Nudge
In my last few health tech reviews, I've talked about the passive tracking of Moves as well as the health app titan, MapMyFitness which are both extremely well developed apps that offer different features for different types of users. The last part of this trifecta of health apps would be amiss if I didn't talk about RunKeeper, yet another amazing health tracking app.
Happy Birthday, RunKeeper
It's hard to believe that some mobile apps have been around for over 5 years, but RunKeeper was one of the first useful fitness tracking apps to hit the market and is celebrating it's 5th birthday this year. RunKeeper was one of the first apps to take advantage of GPS tracking and quickly added a strong feature set to it's app that made it hard to believe it was free. This app became a must have for virtually any mobile user that cared at all about fitness and their numbers show it - with over 22.5 million users, RunKeeper has a mammoth user base.
RunKeeper now has an Elite membership that you pay $19.99 a year or $4.99 a month for that include coaching programs, enhanced tracking, and advanced reporting, however the free version still has all the great features that make it so attractive.
Using RunKeeper
After a 30 second setup on your mobile device including adding your age, weight, height, etc, you're ready to start using the app. Probably the most used feature with RunKeeper is GPS tracking and it's as easy as hitting the "Go Running" button on the start screen.
While tracking a quick run is very handy, the more you use RunKeeper the more you'll want to use it's training features. You can set up your own training sets including custom interval training, distance, or target pace or select from free programs such as a couch to 5k program. If you are subscribed to RunKeeper Elite, you're able to select premium training programs for more advanced users.
Do you workout mostly in the gym? Not a problem as RunKeeper has options for manual entry of gym equipment and different types of workouts.
Well Connected
As I mentioned in my review of MapMyFitness, it's very important for fitness apps to support a plethora of tracking devices and RunKeeper does just that. They have an open api that allows for manufacturers and developers to integrate their devices and apps. RunKeeper also has an app store that you can see which ones are supported.
RunKeeper is very social as well and has a very active social userbase. You can connect to friends and share your workouts with each other within the app for encouragement as well as export your workouts to facebook, twitter, etc.
RunKeeper Syncs With Nudge!
One of the greatest new things to come out of Nudge is that we now support RunKeeper! Everything you log with Runkeeper automatically gets imported into Nudge which then figures out your Nudge Factor- a single score that tells you how healthy you're living.
Conclusion
RunKeeper has over 22 million users because it's such a great app and deserves to be the fitness tracking titan that it is. I highly suggest you download RunKeeper if you haven't used it. If you weren't happy with it a few years ago, you might want to give it another try as they've added a ton of functionality in the last year.
