New Player in the Health Tracking Space?

Several notable outlets released stories this week announcing that high-end wearable maker, Basis, has put itself on the market, reportedly holding conversations with practically every major consumer tech company out there. Just think of a brand and they have probably spoken to them. For those unfamiliar, Basis has been touted as one of the highest quality trackers on the market with unmatched tracking capabilities, not only possessing the ability to track a person's steps, but to even measure items such as skin temperature and heart rate patterns. Looking at the products specs alone, it's easy to see why these watches come fully equipped with a $200 price tag.

With such an advanced sensor, whoever acquires the Basis technology will have the ability to position themselves as one of the most innovative products on the market, and rumor has it that there may be a new player in the wearables space.

Who's a Likely Suitor?

Most people are familiar with Google's recent $3.2 acquisition of Nest that positioned Google as one of the leaders in the smart-home movement overnight, highlighting how this day in age the tech giants of the world can seamlessly jump across verticals with the stroke of a pen. The health tracking space is no different. For months readers have been ingesting rumors of Apple's apparent foray into health with notable hires as well as the ever present stream of leaked iWatch concepts, and suggestions of Apple's interest in Basis could soon turn this all into a reality.

One thing is for sure is that regardless of whether Apple incorporates this new technology into a wearable or a new phone, the inclusion of their brand into the market could really set the standard for future devices.

The missions of Apple and Basis certainly align as the two share a similar focus of marrying sleek design with unparalleled functionality, which could potential justify such an acquisition.

When It's Apple We Never Know Much

Unfortunately, even with all of this is speculation, we won't really know what Apple is scheming until the formal announcement itself. But if the new release is anything similar to the latest iWatch concepts whirling around, I think we will have some pretty anxious consumers out there.

Would you wear the iWatch?

This is my theory, while companies like Basis and the like who have a more precise target in mind for its customers, the holy grail of watches will be the one to incorporate everything into one device.

Samsung tried this with the current Galaxy Gear and I think even they know it wasn't a successful attempt with rumors that a second version is to be announced/presented at MWC in less than a weeks time.

If anyone does buy Basis or license its technology, they will have a pretty big lead as far as the areas that this technology already addresses. Incorporating that into their own product will be the only work they need to do instead of coming up with a whole new way of doing what Basis has already done.

I don't feel though that $200 is too much for everything that Basis's watch is able to do and do it accurately. But I would much rather pay $200 for a watch that can do everything Basis can do as well as everything the Galaxy Gear has been trying to do but with a battery life and outdoor visibility that makes sense for a wristwatch. I have enough devices I am charging on a daily basis and taking up enough wall outlets to do so, don't need to add another to the list.
