3 Totally Different Strength Training Apps Worth Checking Out Today

Posted by Phil Beene on Mar 20, 2014 1:36:06 PM

The App Store is chalk full of strength training apps, and let's be honest, they aren't all worth the time it takes to download them. With all the riffraff out there it can be impossible to find a good place to start, and that's exactly why this "Shortlist of Strength Training Apps" was created. And for a list of only three apps all focused on strictly on strength training, these fantastic executions provide three wildly different experiences, and you're bound to become a fan of at least one.

For the quick workday circuit...

Sworkit

Sworkit is all about body-weight exercise circuits. To get started you set the type of workout you’re looking for, e.g. “Strength Training,” the a target area, e.g. “Upper Body,” and how long you want to work (5 to 60 minutes) ...and you’re ready to “Sworkit." The Pro version adds a pleasant British lady-voice to lead you through exercise transitions, which beats trying to sneak a look at your screen mid-routine. And the ability to build and save custom circuits is also a nice plus, especially for advanced users who really want to target specific areas.

This app is flat out easy to use and great for a quick workout that requires absolutely zero thinking (which is awesome after a long workday). I highly recommend it.

Just simple, beautiful, workout tracking made easy...

Liftium

Liftium provides without a doubt the simplest, cleanest strength training log experience out there. If you are just looking for a quick way to keep track of your exercises, I highly recommend it. Navigate through exercises sorted by equipment used or muscle group, and add it to your beautifully simple, calendar-style log. The periodic table theme on the calendar is a super-nice design touch, and makes it surprisingly easy to identify which muscles you focused on in previous workouts, and you can easily export all your data as a CSV if you’re into playing with data on your own time. If you like the sound of it, do yourself a favor and check it out in the App Store.

For training with the best...

Touchfit: GSP

If you’re going to follow someone through a workout, it might as well be GSP. As in Georges St-Pierre former UFC Welterweight Champion, who is only “former” because he decided to take a hiatus from beating the bejesus out of the top contenders. Normally this app wouldn’t really be my kind of thing, but in this case, GSP leads you through series of interesting exercises that you might not be used to - and a lot of which are great for balance and flexibility just as much as strength. To set your fitness level, you start by rating the difficulty of a series of simple exercises, and from there, the routines are yours for the taking. Learn more about the app here.

That's my Strength Training Shortlist. What are some of your favorites?
